A player is tasked with issuing simple commands allowing the character to overcome the obstacles, jump over chasms, as well as perform numerous snowboard tricks awarded with points. During the game, one also has to catch runaway animals, collect coins, and escape the encountered enemies. Alto's Odyssey falls under the endless runner game genre. This means that the track never ends and is procedurally generated. Practically speaking, a player cannot 'win' the game – eventually, he is bound to make one mistake too much and finish the ride. The game builds on attempting to cover the longest distance possible and beat the scores achieved by a player himself or by others.
