Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier for PS4, PC and XONE is an adventure game based on the Planet of the Apes movie franchise started back in 1968. The game is a debut project of the British Imaginati studio, which has been established under Imaginarium Productions – a company specializing in producing special effects and motion capture sessions. PlotPlanet of the Apes: Last Frontier references directly the movie trilogy started in 2011 and completed six years later. The action of the game is set between the events shown in the movies titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. A player can follow the adventures of the primates, who have separated themselves from the group being in the center of the movies in order to hide in the forests and caves throughout the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, the harsh conditions and hunger have forced them to abandon their hideout – the only way for the herd to survive is to launch an attack on a small farm inhabited by humans. During the game, players get to familiarize themselves with both the humans living on the farm and the herd of primates who want to attack the farm. MechanicsEven though the developers were inspired by the games created by Telltale Games, Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier for PS4, PC and XONE does not allow a player to control particular characters or explore the in-game locations. One's role is limited to selecting dialog options. In spite of that, the game is very engrossing and forces a player to think on his feet – all the choices determine the story’s direction (some decisions might result in the deaths of certain key characters) and ending. Unlike the long episodic productions such as The Walking Dead, the game described herein can be completed in less than 2-3 hours. Interestingly enough, however, one can complete the game multiple times to follow all the stories. Technical aspectsPlanet of the Apes: Last Frontier for PS4, PC and XONE is based on Unreal Engine 4. As a player has limited control over the gameplay and the camera (practically speaking, one is watching an interactive movie), the developers could focus on polishing the graphical details and the acting. All animations were created with the motion capture technology – the same as during the production of Planet of the Ape movies. The primates communicate using mostly the sign language.
